05 Mar The Principle of First
This has changed my perspective of tithing massively. I always thought there was compulsion to do it – and that feeling of guilt that you get when you don’t put money in the offering. But when thinking about why we tithe, I’m incredibly motivated to return this all to God. Why?
“Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.” Proverbs 3:9-10
“And the Egyptians treated us harshly and humiliated us and laid on us hard labor. 7 Then we cried to the Lord, the God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. 8 And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great deeds of terror, with signs and wonders. 9 And he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 And behold, now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground, which you, O Lord, have given me.” Deuteronomy 26
Honour God with your possessions – otherwise you’re stealing from God. Compare the difference of the phrase “Bring a tithe” and understand you’re unable to say “give a tithe” because it’s not yours.
God can never be second. It’s against His nature. We have to tithe and give our first fruits to him. How often have I said “Oh we don’t have enough to bring to God this month.” We need to give it first. God is practical and not legalistic.
Why do we tithe? God has brought us out with a mighty hand, delivering us from being slaves to God. And all the good things we enjoy is from God. We were saved – God with a mighty hand has given us freedom. We used to be Slaves. I want to tell my own son: “I wasn’t always a Christian. But God with a mighty hand has give me everything and therefore, son, we gladly give all.”
Put God first in every area of life – including finances. You will never afford to tithe until you tithe. It breaks the tithing curse by doing it. We’re redeemed from being slaves to sin. Wow.
